Two years ago, the hashtag #romanempire went viral. With the question “How often do you think about the Roman Empire?” and over a billion views, it revealed a collective nostalgia—particularly among men—for Ancient Rome as an idealized refuge from the modern world, imagined as a lost place of authority and belonging.
“There’s No Place Like Rome” portrays my uncle Pinji during my first visit to his home in Bulgaria. Drawing on his fascination with Ancient Rome, the film explores Pinji’s longing for great role models following him through post-Soviet landscapes and fictional worlds.
Vor zwei Jahren ging der Hashtag #romanempire viral. Mit der Frage „Wie oft denkst du über das Römische Reich nach?“ und über einer Milliarde Aufrufe offenbarte er eine kollektive Nostalgie, insbesondere unter Männern, für das antike Rom als idealisierte Alternative zur modernen Welt — ein verloren geglaubter Ort der Autorität und Zugehörigkeit.
„There’s No Place Like Rome“ porträtiert meinen Onkel Pinji während meines ersten Besuchs in seinem Haus in Bulgarien. Ausgehend von seiner Faszination für das antike Rom untersucht der Film Pinjis Sehnsucht nach großen Vorbildern und begleitet ihn durch postsowjetische Landschaften und fiktionale Welten.
